Type 1 Granite

Type 1 Granite

Mixed grades from dust to 40mm

Type 1 granite is the industry-standard material for sub-base construction work. This MOT-certified crushed granite aggregate is essential for creating stable, load-bearing foundations beneath driveways, patios, paths, and building floors. The angular nature of crushed granite allows the particles to interlock when compacted, creating an incredibly strong base layer that resists movement and settling over time.

Common Uses:

  • Driveway sub-base construction
  • Patio and path foundations
  • Building floor base layers
  • Drainage trenches and soakaways
  • Road construction and repairs
  • Hardstanding areas for vehicles

Essential for any construction project requiring a solid, stable foundation

Building Sand

Building Sand

Fine grade, washed

Our building sand, also known as soft sand or bricklayers sand, is a fine-grade washed sand that forms the foundation of quality mortar and concrete mixes. Sourced from trusted suppliers and carefully graded, this sand provides the smooth, workable consistency that professional builders demand. The fine particles ensure excellent adhesion when mixed with cement, creating strong bonds between bricks, blocks, and rendering applications.

Common Uses:

  • Bricklaying and blockwork mortar
  • Rendering and plastering
  • General-purpose concrete mixes
  • Pointing and repointing
  • Floor screed preparation
  • Garden and children's play areas

The go-to sand for all bricklaying, rendering and general construction work

Sharp Sand

Sharp Sand

Coarse grade, washed

Sharp sand, sometimes called grit sand or concreting sand, features larger, more angular particles compared to building sand. This coarser texture makes it ideal for applications requiring greater strength and improved drainage. When mixed with cement, sharp sand creates a stronger bond than soft sand, making it the preferred choice for floor screeds, paving joints, and heavy-duty concrete work. The angular particles also promote better water drainage in landscaping applications.

Common Uses:

  • Floor screeds and levelling compounds
  • Paving and slab bedding
  • Grouting and joint filling
  • Strong concrete mixes
  • Drainage improvement
  • Render base coats

Best for floor screeds, paving work and applications requiring superior strength

Product FAQs

Common questions about our aggregates and how to use them

How much aggregate do I need for my driveway?
The amount depends on your driveway size and the depth of material required. As a rough guide, you'll need approximately 1 tonne of Type 1 per 10 square metres at 50mm compacted depth. For a standard single car driveway (around 15m²), you'd need roughly 1.5-2 tonnes of sub-base. Contact us with your measurements and we'll calculate exact quantities.
What's the difference between building sand and sharp sand?
Building sand (soft sand) has fine, rounded particles ideal for mortar, rendering and bricklaying. Sharp sand has coarser, angular particles better suited for floor screeds, paving, and concrete where greater strength and drainage are needed. Use building sand for joining materials together; use sharp sand for structural applications.
Can I mix different aggregates for my project?
Yes, different aggregates serve different purposes. A typical driveway project might use Type 1 granite for the sub-base, sharp sand for bedding, and 20mm decorative stone as the surface layer. Our team can advise on the right combination for your specific project requirements.
How do I calculate how much topsoil I need?
Measure your area in square metres, then multiply by the depth in metres. For lawn establishment, you typically need 150mm (0.15m) depth. So a 50m² lawn would need 50 x 0.15 = 7.5 cubic metres. Topsoil weighs approximately 1.4 tonnes per cubic metre, so you'd need around 10.5 tonnes.
Is Type 1 granite the same as MOT Type 1?
Yes, they're the same product. MOT stands for Ministry of Transport, which set the original specification. Type 1 granite meets this specification for sub-base material, making it suitable for road construction and any load-bearing foundation work.
What size gravel is best for driveways?
20mm gravel is the most popular choice for driveways. It's large enough to stay in place under vehicle traffic but small enough to walk on comfortably. 10mm is better suited for decorative borders and paths with lighter foot traffic.
Can crushed brick be used instead of Type 1?
Crushed brick rubble can work well for many sub-base applications, particularly non-critical areas like garden paths, shed bases, and temporary access routes. For driveways carrying regular vehicle traffic, Type 1 granite is recommended as it provides superior compaction and load-bearing properties.
How deep should my sub-base be?
For driveways, a minimum of 100-150mm compacted Type 1 is recommended. For patios and paths with lighter use, 75-100mm is usually sufficient. For areas with heavy vehicle traffic or poor ground conditions, you may need up to 200mm depth.
Do you sell aggregates in bulk bags?
Yes, we supply aggregates both as loose bulk loads and in bulk bags (approximately 850kg each). Bulk bags are convenient for smaller projects or where access is limited. They're easy to move with a forklift and keep materials clean and contained.
What's the minimum delivery quantity?
We have no strict minimum, but delivery costs are the same whether we bring half a tonne or several tonnes. For small quantities, collecting from our yard often works out more economical. For deliveries, we typically recommend at least 1-2 tonnes to make delivery cost-effective.
